Ifrane – Morocco reiterates its unwavering support to re-appoint Mohamed Ould Amar as Director-General of the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) for a second term.
The Moroccan government expressed its support for the Mauritanian official in an official statement yesterday, demonstrating the brotherly links that unite King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
It also underlines Morocco’s far-reaching cooperation with its sisterly nation, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
Following the ups and downs in Moroccan-Mauritanian ties due to the two countries’ conflicting perspectives on regional concerns, particularly the Western Sahara file, the relationship hit a new turning point following the convening of the two neighbors’ joint upper committees.
Earlier in March, Rabat hosted the 8th session of the Moroccan-Mauritanian High Joint Commission. On this occasion, Moroccan and Mauritanian officials pledged to collaborate on regional issues such as the Palestinian cause, the Libyan crisis, the Western Sahara dispute, and Sahel instability.
This joint committee meeting in Rabat ended an almost nine-year break since the previous session was held in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott in April 2013.
They also urged for more collaboration in a variety of fields, including agriculture, fishing, trade, tourism, education, and vocational training.
Since then, the relationship between the two countries has noticeably improved in recent times in various domains.
Founded on 25 July 1970, ALECSO is an Arab League organization headquartered in Tunisia. It intends to create and coordinate educational, cultural, and scientific initiatives throughout the Arab world.
ALESCO is made up of 22 member countries, including Morocco, and includes five regional offices and institutions.
