Rabat – The African Confederation of Football (CAF) has appointed Moroccan Hamza El Hajoui as a member of the organizing committee for CAF’s club competitions and the licensing management committee.

El Hajoui’s appointment came after careful consideration, particularly following Morocco’s organization of the 2018 African Cup of Nations, when he served as a chairman of the organizing committee.

Several experts have described this appointment as a significant step to end a string of embarrassing incidents that happened within the CAF committee in recent years.

For Morocco, the appointment could be seen as a victory over Tunisia, Egypt, and Algeria, who had dominated the organizing committee in the past. The presence of Morocco is expected to contribute to CAF reforms to tackle challenges and crises the continent has been facing, including corruption.

Morocco’s notable presence in African sports in recent years has made it possible for the country to voice its opinion within the football body.

CAF already has a strong Moroccan presence, with Fouzi Lekjaa being the CAF’s Finance Committee Chairman.

Lekjaa was voted as a member of the FIFA Council during the 43rd Ordinary and Elective General Assembly of the CAF in 2021.

El Hajoui was previously lauded for his contribution to the success of the organization of the 2018 African Championship for local leagues (CHAN). This tournament was hosted by Morocco who won the title in both 2018 and 2020, making it the country with the most champions in this competition alongside DR Congo.

El Hajoui who was also a member of the organizing committee of the 2020 CHAN held in Cameroon last year, has returned to serve as head of the Al-Fath Sports Club nearly six months ago, succeeding Nawal Khalifa.

Local media reported that CAF President Patrice Motsepe has commended El Hajoui’s commitment to the success of the CHAN in two years, and has decided to officially include him within CAF’s club competitions and licensing management committee.
