Rabat – London-based Premier League club West Ham United is reportedly in the process of signing Rennes central defender Nayef Aguerd, with the British tabloid The Sun reporting that the Moroccan international is “working on a deal” with West Ham coach David Moyes.
The news of a possible transfer of the reliable center-back who featured prominently in Morocco’s recent Africa Cup of Nations campaign was well received among the West Ham faithful.
The 26-year old tall defender currently plays in the French Ligue 1 for Rennes, who signed the Moroccan to a five-year deal in August 2020.
Yet Aguerd’s time in France is numbered according to several West Ham-watchers. An opinion piece in West Ham’s supporters magazine Hammers News claims that Aguerd “will surely be the first summer arrival” at the club’s iconic crown-shaped London Stadium.
The Moroccan defender has been described as a “brilliant” long-term replacement for the injured 34-year old Italian Angelo Ogbonna, with West Ham-watcher Anthony Martin saying he “strongly believes” the London club will soon sign Nayef Aguerd.

West Ham United has suffered a run of bad luck in defense, especially on the left side of defense. The club is in desperate need of a left-footed defender, and Hammers News writes that fans would be “absolutely delighted” to see the Moroccan join the West Ham squad.
At 1.90m tall, left footed and with strong control of the ball in possession, Nayef Aguerd could be an ideal fit for Britain’s top league. Aguerd featured in all group matches of Morocco’s last AFCON run, performing well besides an unfortunate own goal against Gabon.
