Rabat – Morocco’s trade union is calling on people to join Social Front protests on Saturday, April 23 across the country against rising fuel and food prices.

The Moroccan Social Front will hold marches this weekend in more than 20 cities across the country, protesting against rising living costs.

Following a meeting on April 17, the Moroccan Social Front announced its plan to hold various protests on Saturday and Sunday against the “rising prices and the systematic repression of various social categories and free voices.”

The front also hosted a video conference on Thursday, April 21 tackling rising prices, energy security, and government responsibility in the matter.

A demonstration will take place this Saturday in Mohammedia near Casablanca in front of the headquarters of the petroleum refining company La Samir to protest against high fuel prices, as well as demand the reopening of the company to contribute to energy security in Morocco.

Morocco’s oil refiner La Samir suspended production in 2015, leaving the country solely dependent on imports to meet its oil demands.

The Federation of the Democratic Left (FDG) and The Unified Trade Union Office of the Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT) have followed through and called for participants to join in a protest this Saturday, after Tarawih prayers, in front of La Samir headquarters to “demand the restart” of the Moroccan refinery and protest against the high cost of fuel and living.

The front believes that the reopening of La Samir company is the only possible solution to overcome oil stress and increase the national reserves of oil energy.

The cities where protests will take place are Rabat, Sale, Fez, Temara, El Jadida, Oujda, Khmissat, Berkan, Taza, El Ksiba, Khenifra, Taourirt, Safi, Beni Mellal, Azrou, Guercif, Souk Sebt, Casablanca, Tetouan, Settat, Biougra, Mohammedia, Taroudant, and Meknes.

The protest in Morocco’s capital Rabat will take place on April 23, at 9:30 p.m. in front of parliament’s headquarters.

The North African country has seen a significant rise in prices of fuel, goods, and services, sparking outrage among Moroccans.
