Morocco Eyes African Health Infrastructure To Counter COVID-19

Rabat – Morocco continues to support the consolidation of African health care institutions in face of the “devastating socio-economic impact”  of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and future health challenges.

This change requires cooperation between national institutions across the continent, said Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the African Union.

Arrouchi noted the importance of quality health infrastructure in alleviating the socio-economic consequences of the “unprecedented” pandemic during the AU’s Permanent Representative Committee meeting on Thursday.

The Moroccan diplomat further invited the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to provide member states with an executive summary on the status of health infrastructure in the continent.

CDC findings should enable African governments to monitor the COVID-19 developments within their countries for better informed decision-making.

CDC Director John Nkengasong welcomed the Moroccan proposal while commending Moroccan efforts in containing the ongoing COVID-19 in Africa.

In February, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita called for African solidarity and unity in face of the current pandemic.

“African solidarity is essential to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on African economies,” he said, noting that remittances could help alleviate such challenges.

Bourita further urged African countries to jointly enhance “vaccine manufacturing capacities in Africa and to vaccinate all of our populations.”

As of April 12, Africa has recorded more than 11 million confirmed COVID-19 cases, over 250,000 of whom passed away.
The South African region has been the African region most impacted by the pandemic, with 5.2 million cases followed by North Africa (3.5 million cases).
