Rabat – Moroccan referee Abdelaziz Lemsallek has died at the age of 32 following a year-long battle with cancer.

Lemsallek passed away at Sheikh Zayed hospital in Rabat, where he had been receiving chemotherapy treatment.

He had been scheduled to be transferred to France, with the help of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), to receive other medical treatment and undergo a bone marrow transplant to cure his cancer.

But he was forced to stay in Morocco after his health deteriorated over the past couple of months.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) covered the late referee’s entire treatment expenses.

FMRF released a statement on April 4 expressing its heartfelt condolences and support to Lemsallek’s family and loved ones.

Lemsallek’s family, friends, and football fans expressed their feelings of grief and sorrow at their loss.

Lemsallek was a national referee from the “West League”. Before becoming a referee in 2005, he worked at Morocco’s Directorate General of National Security (DGSN).

Lemsallek received the National Referee Badge in 2011 and won the Best Young Referee award in 2015.

The last match the late referee led was between Ittihad Tanger and Wydad Athletic in the National Professional Football League on April 25, 2021.
