Fez – FC Barcelona’s footballer Abdessamad Ezzalzouli has dual nationality now. The talented young man obtained Spanish nationality this week, indicating that he can be summoned by both Morocco and Spain’s national football teams to the upcoming competitions.

Yet, Ezzalzouli’s decision over his future national selection remains firm, reassuring Morocco’s Royal Football Federation (FRMF) officials that he intends to represent his country of birth in future events. But not in the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In the latest development, the right-winger is reluctant to represent Morocco in the upcoming AFCON taking place in Cameroon next year. He aspires to take advantage of the opportunity that the Blaugrana has given to him and secure his position as a starter on the team.

Barcelona’s wonderkid has been under a lot of pressure lately following his eagerness to represent Morocco’s football team. After featuring in Halilidzic’s squad list for the upcoming African competition, the Spanish federation urged him not to represent Morocco, pledging to summon him to the Spanish football team’s future tournaments.

Ezzalzouli indirectly turned down the offer, pinpointing that he had already made up his decision to represent the Atlas Lions and mentioning that he is a Moroccan national team player on his social media accounts.

Morocco’s national football team coach Vahid Halilodzic also had his say about Spain’s pressure on the Beni-Mellal born to represent Morocco’s side. Halilodzic stressed that Spain “cannot forbid” the Blaugrana footballer from representing Morocco’s Atlas Lions.

Following the player’s eye-catching performances under FC Barcelona’s new manager Xavi Hernandez, the Spanish press launched a fierce campaign to put pressure on the rising star urging him to represent the Spanish side.

For his part, the 20-year-old was resisting such temptations and showing great interest in taking part in Morocco’s football team lineup. It remains to be seen whether this latest development in Ezzalzouli’s case would shake his firm stance of representing the Atlas Lions.
