Mouad Mrabet, the coordinator of the Moroccan National Center for Public Health Emergency Operations at the Ministry of Health, has confirmed that Morocco is witnessing a third wave of community transmission of the COVID-19 virus.
Mrabet reported a significant increase in the number of COVID cases across Morocco, explaining that the country’s weekly caseload went up by almost 150% last week.
He revealed that Morocco’s current COVID reproduction rate (RT) is at 1.42, while the weekly positive rate increased to 3.1%.
Delta and Omicron are the two variants currently circulating in Morocco, Mrabet said, warning: “The latter will probably take the upper hand.” he warned..
According to Mrabet, current indicators suggest Morocco’s third wave of COVID nearly two weeks ago, between December13-19.
The wave was confirmed in the week from December 20-26, during which three regions went from low level of COVID infections to moderate level.
“The current wave will probably be faster and shorter than the Delta wave,” Mrabent said.
The health official forecasts a peak during the week between January 17-23.
“It all depends on the degree of adherence of the population to the existing preventive measures and others that will be implemented by the government,” he said.
Mrabet concluded that people have to stay vigilant and get vaccinated to reduce the risk of severe COVID cases.
“Remember to see hospitals urgently if any sign of worsening condition appears,” he said.
