Rabat – King Mohammed VI sent a congratulatory message to Lebanon’s President Michel Aoun in commemoration of his country’s Independence Day.

In his message, the monarch expressed his warm congratulations and sincere wishes to the Lebanese people for the progress their country has made in terms of security, unity, and stability after emerging from a crippling civil war.

The king reiterated his high regard for the bonds of fraternity and solidarity between Morocco and Lebanon, reaffirming his determination to continue to work alongside President Aoun to reinforce bilateral relations in several areas of cooperation.

The two countries have maintained cordial relations, and earlier this year King Mohammed VI sent 90 tonnes of food aid to Lebanon as the country faced a dire crisis due to socio-political divides, economic mismanagement, and COVID-19-related issues.

Morocco has also sent a military convoy to Lebanon to establish a military hospital following the devastating explosion in Beirut on August 4, 2020. The explosion generated a loss amounting to roughly $15 billion.

In response to Morocco’s humanitarian aid, Lebanon’s then-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Al-Mawla Safir, stressed that Morocco’s aid highlighted the North African country’s “strong attachment to the values of solidarity with brotherly countries.”

Another element of the strong diplomatic relationship between the two countries is Lebanon’s position on the Western Sahara conflict.

In a July meeting with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Zina Aker reaffirmed her country’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara, reiterating Lebanon’s “rejection of separatist states” in the southern region of the North African country.
