Rabat – European Parliament member Laszlo Trocsanyi said Morocco and the EU have always maintained a “privileged” partnership.

The European Parliament’s official made the remark in Fez after a conference organized by the Euromed University in the spiritual city on Wednesday.

“Morocco and the European Union have always maintained a privileged partnership. In the European Parliament, we support the kingdom which enjoys exemplary prosperity and stability in the region,” he said.

Trocsanyi also described the European openness to Morocco as “very important,” recalling the opportunities for cooperation and exchange in higher education, scientific research, and innovation.

Mustapha Bousmina, the president of the EuroMed University of Fez welcomed the visit of Trocsanyi to Morocco, highlighting the “excellent” relations of friendship and cooperation between Morocco and Hungary.

The president’s chairman also described Hungary as a “reliable and solid ally” thanking the European country for its support for Rabat’s position within the European Union.

“Morocco and Hungary are at the borders of Europe. Each of the two countries receives and manages migratory flows,” the president added, referencing the countries’ efforts to tackle  migration issues.

Several members of the European Parliament expressed satisfaction with the importance of Morocco’s partnership with Morocco.

Some of them also took a strong stance against Algeria’s recent decision to terminate the Maghreb Europe pipeline contract with Morocco.

Members of the parliament also wrote an open letter to High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borell.

Italian MEPs Antonio Tajani and Massimiliano Salini, the lead authors of the letter, expressed concerns on the future of European dependence on foreign energy resources given the recent actions of Algeria.

“Algeria’s unilateral decision to cut off trade relations with Rabat raises important questions about the energy dependence of the European Union, in particular in view of the increase in the prices of raw materials and, in particular, of natural gas, which has a strong impact on the electricity and gas bills of European citizens,” the two politicians wrote.
