Rabat –  Months after recalling its ambassador from Morocco, Algeria has officially ended the functions of its diplomatic representative in Rabat.

The decision was published in the Algerian Official Bulletin this Monday, October 11, cementing Algeria’s unilateral decision to cut diplomatic ties with its western neighbor.

“By presidential decree of 19 Safar 1443 corresponding to September 26, 2021, are terminated, from August 25, 2021, the functions of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, in Rabat (Kingdom of Morocco), exercised by Mr. Abdelhamid Abdaoui,” read the bulletin announcement.

Abdelhamid Abdaoui was recalled in July for consultations. A month later, Algiers announced the rupture of its diplomatic relations with Morocco.

Since then, signs of appeasement have been non-existent. No later than this Sunday, October 10, Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune reaffirmed his refusal of any mediation to de-escalate tensions between his country and Rabat.

He threatened Morocco with further escalation and war, claiming in an interview broadcast that the North African kingdom harbors long-standing hostility toward Algeria. “Whoever searches for us will find us. We are a resistant people and we know the value of war and gunpowder as well as the value of peace. Whoever assaults us will regret the day he was born,” Tebboune said.

Algerian officials have traditionally lashed out at Morocco for supposedly being an existential threat for Algerian interests and stability. Algiers’ list of grievances appears to have become longer in recent weeks, with the  Algerian regime now accusing Morocco of masterminding almost everything that has gone wrong in Algeria over the years.

Most recently, the Algerian High Security Council blamed  Morocco for the forest fires that ravaged northern Algeria this August.

While thorough investigations by Algerian police do not bear out claims of a Moroccan-led plot to wreak havoc in Algeria, all senior Algerian government officials – mostly President Tebboune and Foreign Affairs Minister Ramtane Lamamra – have consistently invoked the unproven accusations to justify Algeria’s apparent determination to unceasingly escalate hostilities with Morocco.
