Rabat – King Mohammed VI will address the Moroccan parliament on Friday, October 8, marking the opening of the first legislative year of the 11th legislature at the Moroccan parliament.

The Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol, and Chancellery said in a statement that the monarch will deliver his speech at 4 p.m.

The speech will be broadcast on national television channels and radio stations.

The monarch instructed parliamentarians to adhere to all preventive measures as part of the country’s protocol against COVID-19.

Traditionally, members of the parliament are required to wear traditional dress (djellaba) in accordance with the rules of procedure of the House of Councillors and the House of Representatives.

King Mohammed VI”s speech is set to follow a royal audience that is scheduled to take place today.

According to reports, the newly appointed Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, is expected to officially announce Morocco’s new government in the coming hours.

King Mohammed VI appointed Akhannouch as Prime Minister last month after the Billionaire politician’s party, the National Rally of Independents (RNI), won Morocco’s 2021 general elections.

The King instructed Akhannouch to form a new cabinet, and the RNI vowed to deliver on reforms and implement policies in line with “the royal vision” as laid out in Morocco’s New Development Model.

RNI, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), and Al Istiqlal announced the formation of a coalition government after securing the most seats during the general elections.

During his  opening of the legislative year speech in 2020, King Mohammed VI  spoke at length about the COVID-9 crisis, emphasizing the need for both citizens and authorities to remain vigilant to avoid a devastating wave of infections.

The monarch also emphasized that the crisis has shone a “spotlight on a number of inadequacies and deficiencies” and called for the implementation of a bold, ambitious universal social protection program by 2025.
