Rabat – Police in the southern Morocco city of Dakhla arrested on September 25 six suspects, including a policeman, for their alleged links with a netowrk active in irregular migration and human trafficking, according to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
A security operation led the city police to arrest five members of the irregular migration network and 49 candidates for undocumented migration, including six women and nine minors.
During the operation, police seized an inflatable boat with an engine and jerry cans of gasoline.
Preliminary investigation determined the involvement of a police inspector working in one of the public security services in the city of Dakhla.
The policeman is suspected of helping “to facilitate illegal immigration operations in return for sums of money from the organizers,” DGSN said.
With the six suspects in police custody, investigations are ongoing to shed further light on the case.
In the past four years, Morocco has dismantled 8,000 human trafficking cells. During the same period, the North African country aborted 14,000 irregular migration attempts, including 80 operations in Ceuta.
