The future of Julian Nagelsmann, the German national team coach, has entered a crucial phase after the “Mannschaft’s” early elimination in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup against Paraguay on penalties. This marks the third consecutive World Cup appearance where the German team has failed to progress far in the competition.
The coach has faced criticism for controversial decisions, mixed messages, sudden changes from his earlier views, continuing to back out-of-form players over others, and ultimately failing to get the team performing despite the quality and talent available in the squad.
The German daily newspaper “Bild” confirmed that Nagelsmann held a lengthy meeting of nearly three hours on Thursday with senior officials of the German Football Association (DFB). The aim was to discuss the reasons for the World Cup failure and to assess the future of the coaching staff.
While Nagelsmann vowed to stay on immediately after Germany’s exit, federation president Bernd Neuendorf stated that “calmly look at the reasons why the team was unable to realize its potential” and that “after such a crushing blow, we cannot and do not wish to simply return to business as usual.”
However, Jürgen Klopp’s name is emerging as the leading candidate to succeed Nagelsmann. Several media outlets have confirmed that the former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager is the top choice to lead the national team in the next phase, despite his current position as global football director at the “Red Bull” group.
The 38-year-old Nagelsmann has a contract as Germany coach through the European Championship in 2028, but Neuendorf and others have reportedly asked him to resign. A decision is expected in the coming days.
