Rabat – Morocco women’s national football team defeated their Cameroonian counterpart during the first round of the Aisha Buhari Cup.
Both teams showed similar skill and power, with the Atlas Lionesses displaying prowess on an equal footing with Cameroon.
Morocco’s goalkeeper Khadija Errmichi proved to be impenetrable against the long-range shots with central defenders Zineb Redouani, Nahla Nakkach, and Sabah Seghir trying to keep the danger at bay.
The Indomitable Lionesses and the Atlas Lionesses were separated by a superb goal by Morocco’s ASFAR midfielder Fatima Tagnaout about 13 before the final whistle. Thanks to this goal, Morocco took its first 3 points of the inaugural Aisha Buhari Invitational Women’s Football Tournament.
While the Moroccan women’s team has yet to win an African trophy, many believe that this ongoing tournament offers the possibility of doing so. Speaking to Nigerian outlet The Guardian, Morocco’s defender and star Hanane Ait El Haj believes that the team can challenge the top teams of the game in the continent and make headlines.
“Our ambition is to win this tournament and improve ourselves,” she said. “It will be a very exciting competition with big teams competing in it, thanks to everyone who organized this tournament.”
Morocco’s next game will be against Mali on September 19. The national squad knows the Malian team very well as both parties faced each other twice last June. Morocco won both games 3-0 and 3-2 respectively.
The mini-tournament is played in Lagos from September 15-21,
The friendly Aisha Buhari Cup is part of Morocco’s preparations for a variety of upcoming sporting events, with particular focus on the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations which will be organized in Morocco.
The continental event is scheduled for either July-August or October–November 2022.
