Denver – Nature, the prestigious scientific journal, has ranked Morocco fourth across Africa in its annual “Nature Index.”

The reputable publication traditionally compiles its list by determining the number of scientific publications each country produces in a given year, especially in the fields of life sciences, physics, chemistry, and environmental science. According to Nature, Morocco produced 71 scientific publications in highly regarded academic journals between January 1st and December 31st of last year.

Morocco was ranked ahead of Tunisia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Algeria, Cameroon, and Rwanda, which make up the remainder of the list of the top ten performers in Africa. Outranking Morocco were South Africa, Egypt, and Kenya. Morocco’s scientific community is increasingly attracting global recognition, with two female researchers from Mohammed V University in Rabat ranking among the top 50 scientists worldwide earlier this year.

Globally, Morocco is still dwarfed by larger countries like the US and China, which pour astronomical amounts of resources into their scientific research. According to  this year’s Nature Index, the US recorded nearly 30,000 scientific publications between January and December 2020.

In spite of the large gulf separating it from the best performers worldwide, Morocco is still taking steps to solidify its position as a regional leader of scientific advancement, and a noted global contributor. Earlier this year, the North African country inaugurated Africa’s most powerful supercomputer.

The supercomputer, which was introduced at Mohammed VI’s Polytechnic University, contains nearly 70,000 CPU cores. It was also just one of the many scientific contributions the North African country has made in recent years.

As the world pivots towards focusing more on digitization and STEM-related fields, Morocco’s government continues to invest heavily into academic and scientific advancement, in the hopes of making the country an important player in the global scientific community.
