Rabat –  Officials responsible for managing the Abdallah Guennoun Library Tangier will undertake the digitalization of its contents, under a multi-party agreement.

The partnership agreement brings together the Regional Directorate of the Department of Culture, the Abdallah Guennoun Foundation for Culture and Scientific Research, and the Council of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Region.

Widely considered one of the most important cultural spaces in the city of Tangier, the Abdallah Guennoun Library and its contents are set to undergo a total rehabilitation, to preserve the tangible and intangible cultural heritage it hosts.

This project will require an overall budget of approximately MAD 6.157 million ($685,595), including MAD 4.7 million ($523,355) for rehabilitation work, and MAD 1.3 million ($111,352) for the equipment of the library.

The aim is to make the library an intellectual beacon of reference in Morocco and across the region.

The facility will provide thousands of rare manuscripts and unpublished books, in addition to ensuring the sustainability of the physical works, and the development of an electronic version of the contents of the library.

Established in 1985, the Abdallah Guennoun Library consists largely of the collections of the eminent Tangier theologian, historian, poet and writer, Si Abdallah Guennoun, who donated his personal library to the city of Tangier after his death.

It includes a large number of rare and unique works, manuscripts and prints, as well as precious documents.
