The Reina Sofia National Museum Art Centre (MNCAR) in Madrid has been hosting the first art exposition of contemporary Moroccan art since March 21. The exhibition, which is themed “Moroccan Trilogy 1950-2020” and will last until September 27, presents a selection of artworks from three milestones in the Moroccan history.
The event explores postcolonial Moroccan history by breaking it down in three periods: Post-Independence (1950 – 1969), Years of Lead (1970 – 1999), Generation 00 (2000-2020), with a focus on the three urban centers of Tetouan, Casablanca and Tangier
The trilogy aims at showcasing the cultural evolution of the Moroccan society through 250 works of art, and it is organized in three chapters providing historical readings of these diverse artistic expressions including artworks, archives, and publications.

The artists featured in the exhibition were key figures who have had a great influence on Moroccan modern art and artistic education in the School of Fine Arts in Casablanca (ESBAC).
Most of them pursued their studies in Europe and the United states, and came back to Morocco to introduce modernity to Moroccan art thanks to their innovative artistic forms, such as Mohamed Melehi, Mohamed Chabâa with Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Hamidi, Mohamed Ataallah, and Mustapha Hafid.

The project is carried out as part of the program for cultural cooperation between Spain and Morocco in the field of Museums. Also participating in the initiative are the National Foundation of Museums of the Kingdom of Morocco (FNM), the Ministry of Culture and Sport of the Government of Spain, and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Qatar.
