Rabat – The Royal Moroccan Boxing Federation (FRMB) decided last week to dissolve the National Technical Directorate after the “poor performance” of Moroccan athletes at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics competition.

A statement from FRMB said that the dissolution will include a suspension of all activities until following the annual general meeting to be held in September

“Following the poor results during the Tokyo Olympics which were below forecasts, the federal office held an emergency meeting” to examine the causes that led to the “unexpected failure” in the Tokyo games, the FRMB said.

The statement said that the dissolution came after an “in-depth” debate and with the approval of the members of the federal office.

Moroccans across the world expressed anger after the disqualification of many Moroccan athletes in a variety of categories since the beginning of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Six people in the boxing category were eliminated from the competition, including Mohamed Hammout, Abdelhaq Nadir, Rabab Cheddar, and Youness Baala among others.

After weeks of disappointing performances from athletes, Morocco achieved a triumphant victory by winning its first gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics today, its first gold in 17 years.

Moroccan runner Soufiane El Bakkali claimed the gold medal at the 3000 steeplechase race today, regaining hope and joy among Moroccans all over the world.

El Bakkali ranked first in the final race, with a time of 08:08:90, beating Ethiopia’s Girma Lamesha (second), and Kenya’s Kegen Benjamin (third).

Mohamed Tendouft ranked 13th  in the same competition.

El Bakkali will take part in another race tomorrow, August 3.
