Rabat – “HEVO Ammonia Morocco” production plant has come a step closer to realization with the signing of a value chain agreement in Rabat on Tuesday, July 13.

The Portuguese technology company Fusion Fuel Green signed an agreement for the realization of the HEVO Ammonia project with Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC), an American engineering solutions provider. The agreement concerns the project’s value chain in terms of logistics, infrastructure, transportation, and security for the ammonia production plant.

The HEVO Ammonia Morocco project will mobilize a total of 865 million euros (MAD 9.1 billion) of investment.

Mohammed Cherkaoui, a scientific advisor to CCC, said at the signing ceremony that the plant will be “the largest green hydrogen and ammonia farm in the world.” He added that the plant’s production will be exclusively exported to Europe.

The project is expected to eventually reach an annual production of 32,850 tons of green hydrogen, 151,800 tons of nitrogen, and 183,650 tons of green ammonia.

Joao Wahnon, business development manager at Fusion Fuel Green, expects that the plant will produce 2,659 tons of green ammonia in 2020, up to 20,000 tons the following year, 40,000 tons by 2024, and 60,00 tons both in 2025 and 2026.

With regards to green hydrogen, the plant is projected to produce 616 tons in 2022, 3,472 tons in 2023, 6,940 tons in 2024, and 10,411 tons in both 2025 and 2026, Wahnon added.

The project will combine various technologies such as water desalination, solar concentration, as well as ammonia and hydrogen production, according to Cherkaoui. It will also create employment and promote technological innovation, he added.

The project falls in line with Morocco’s ambitious efforts to transition towards sustainable energy, whether it be in terms of the world’s largest solar complex, the NOOR Power Station in Ouarzazate, or the country’s pivotal role in Germany’s ambitions to achieve carbon neutrality.
