Denver – Italian law enforcement remain puzzled after two Moroccan women were found dead in a corn field in northern Italy. Italian media reported the incident took place last week outside San Giuliano, a small commune located near the city of Milan.

The circumstances surrounding the death of the two women, 28 years old Sara El Jafaari, and 32 years old Hanan Nekhla, is still unclear to investigators, and the exact cause of death for the women also remains a mystery.

A 28-year-old Italian worker known as “Andrea P” was detained in connection with the women’s death. Andrea was allegedly driving a tractor dispersing pesticides when he discovered the bodies of the women and is under investigation for double manslaughter.

Around the scene of the crime, police “found blankets, traces of drug use and some cell phones” which further complicated the situation. Currently, the main theories are that either the women were struck and killed by the tractor operator, or the women were already dead from drug overdose by the time Andrea arrived on the scene.

Police also suspect there were at least two more people in the field with Sara and Hanan, as two additional cell phones that did not  belong to the girls were found in the general vicinity.

A relative of Hanan relayed that the two women “had gone out that night with two Moroccan boys,” and some speculate the boys may have fled the cornfield after the death of the girls. Italian emergency dispatchers received a call from one of the women stating that “she had been hit by an agricultural vehicle and that she was injured while her friend died.”

This call prompted a search for the girls, with the mobilization of search helicopters, drones, and search parties on foot. However, the dispatch operator was unable to figure out the location of the women, and the bodies of both Hanan and Sara were not discovered until Saturday.

An autopsy scheduled for today will likely give police crucial insight as to what really happened to the two women.
