Denver- In a statement released yesterday, Head of Government Saad-Eddine El Othmani stated that the government would focus on improving and expanding high speed internet access throughout the country by 2023. The statement was made during a meeting of the national agency responsible for internet development within the country.

Mr. El Othmani, who is the chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT), announced a new national target to implement national coverage of “a broadband of at least two megabits by 2023,” according to Moroccan state media. Mr. El Othmani also set a goal to cover “no less than 50% of Moroccan households” with high speed internet of up to 100 megabits per second by 2025.

According to Mr. El Othmani, domestic internet usage has increased by 55% since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Prime Minister praised the numerous departments involved in the maintenance of the nation’s internet systems for facilitating “ the continuity of work, education, training, commerce and audio and visual communication” throughout the country in the midst of the pandemic.

Morocco has invested large amounts of capital into the national digital infrastructure recently, as it focuses on moving the country onto the cutting edge of digital technology.

During yesterday’s meeting Mr. Othmani asked members of the ANRT to focus on improving digital services for the country’s businesses, given the “growth potential of this market.”

Efforts to modernize business institutions have already been implemented via several different avenues, including a large loan granted last week from the World Bank, which will be used to develop improved financial and digital systems throughout the country.

The ambitious plans for Morocco’s internet expansion comes as Morocco plans to modernize its digital infrastructure and integrate itself into the increasingly digital global economic and scientific sectors. Earlier this year, Morocco inaugurated the most powerful supercomputer in Africa at Mohammed VI Polytechnic university.
