Rabat – The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ) arrested two suspects affiliated with ISIS on Tuesday.

A statement from the BCIJ, which works under the General Directorate of Territorial  Surveillance (DGST), said that the suspects were active in Ait Melloul, a city in the suburban area of Agadir and Oulad Berhil in the Taroudant Province.

The suspects who pledged allegiance to the emir of ISIS are aged 23 and 24, the statement added.

Both suspects planned terror plots targeting “vital establishments” and security elements.

BCIJ put the suspects in custody pending further investigation under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office that is in charge of terrorism cases. The suspects will be held to determine the extent of their involvement in the potential terrorist acts.

The investigation also seeks to determine the potential network of the individuals arrested.

The operation is part of Morocco’s efforts to combat terrorist threats that seek to undermine Morocco’s stability.

The BCIJ is one of the key security units in the country. The unit works in collaboration with other security services to combat terrorism and drug trafficking.

Since its creation in 2015, BCIJ has carried out several operations to dismantle terror cells and networks active in drug and human trafficking.

Morocco has been intensifying its counterterrorism approach for years.

Since 2002, the country’s services have dismantled 2,009 terror cells.

Morocco also arrested over 3, 353 people for their alleged involvement in terrorist activities and aborted over 500 “bloody” terrorist plots.
