Rabat – Morocco’s Fishing Office reported that the marketed discharged quantities of coastal and traditional fishing products increased by 21% in terms of value in the first quarter of 2021.
The increase is estimated at MAD 2.5 billion ($280 million) between January and March of this year.
The office said the weight of the unloaded quantities amounted to 246, 409 tonnes.
The figure represents a slight decrease of 1 % compared to the end of March of 2020.
The data emphasized that the value of molluscs, crustaceans, and pelagic fish rose respectively by 37 %, 23 % and 8 %.
Meanwhile, the value of shellfish decreased by 73 %, followed by marine algae (- 17 %) and white fish (- 2 %).
The fishing office said Atlantic ports unloaded a total of 240,62 tonnes of coastal and traditional fishing products, representing a decline of 1 % compared to the end of March 2020.
In terms of value, the same ports recorded a growth of 22 % to reach nearly MAD 2,34 billion .
As for the ports on the Mediterranean, the hubs showed a drop of 12% to reach 6,347 tonnes.
The value of the products in ports on the Mediterranean increased by 15% to reach MAD 198.5 million dirhams.
In 2018, a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) ranked Morocco 13th globally and first in Africa, with 1.4 million tonnes of fish production.
The North African country has multiple ports, and it exports fisheries products to a wide range of trade partners, including the EU and Russia.
Morocco’s fish and maritime products’ exports totaled 570,000 tonnes in the first nine months of 2020.
The number reached a value of $1.66 billion.
The volume represents a 7% increase compared to the same period in 2019.
