Rabat – Morocco ranks among countries where citizens have confidence in their local police and feel safe walking alone at night, according to a study released by Gallup Global Law and Order.

The kingdom scored 83 out of 100 points in the global ranking, making it the 43rd out of 135 countries on the 2016 list. The score is based on a survey of Moroccans’ sense of personal security and their personal experiences with crime and law enforcement.

Among Arab countries, Morocco is the number three country on the ranking, preceded by Algeria (90 points) and Jordan (89 points).

Globally, Singapore was on the top of the list with a total points of 97, followed by Uzbekistan (95 points), Iceland (92 points) and then Turkmenistan (91 points), while the lowest position went to Venezuela (42 points).

The Gallup index, based on the answers collected from 136,000 citizens, found that more than 68 percent said they have confidence in their local police, while 64 percent feel safe walking alone at night where they live.

The survey, issued recently, relied on four main questions about individuals’ confidence in the local police force and their safety while walking alone at night in the city, in addition to their experiences of theft, assault, or mugging within the past 12 months.

Gallup explained that this survey is a way of monitoring sustainable development, since there are “strong relationships between people’s answers to these questions and external measures related to economic and social development.”
