Rabat – “Saudi Gold.” This how a Spanish media outlet has described King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud’s recent vacation in the northern Moroccan city of Tangier.

La Vanguardia, a Spanish news website, said that the Saudi king’s arrival in Tangier has brought “economic relief for the area” after a short period of uncertainty.

The King’s visit came amid a political disagreement between Morocco and Saudi Arabia vis-à-vis the Qatar crisis, with Rabat adopting a neutral stance regarding the embargo imposed on Doha by Riyadh and its Arab allies.

Many businesses profiting from the King’s visit to Tangier were worried that these differences would make the Saudi monarch cancel his trip to Tangier.

“The arrival of Salman in Tangier is an important economic relief for the area,” said the Spanish website, adding that the Saudi King brings “ an important injection into the local economy.”

King Salman owns a 30-hectare mansion outside of Tangier near Cape Spartel, above the beaches of Jbilia.

With the king came almost a thousand others. According to La Vanguardia, 900 rooms were booked and 400 high-end cars rented during the king and his companions’ one-month stay.

The large sizeof the monarch’s entourage, who couldn’t allbe accommodated in his mansion, benefited the city’s luxury hotels such as Mirage, Movenpick, Hilton, Solazur, and Minzah.

This year’s visit marks the third consecutive summer vacation King Salman has spentin Tangier. Previously, he would go to Marbilla in Spain with his late wife Sultana.

As La Vanguardia noted, King Mohammed VI is expected to pay a visit to his Saudi counterpart in the luxurious mansion.

The two heads of states are set to discuss their respective position on Qatar, another significant aspect of King Salman’s visit, noted the Spanish news outlet.
