Rabat – Falling back against the red clay at the end of the men’s French Open final, Rafael Nadal celebrated his win in front of cheering fans Sunday.
Fresh from #10 victories in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, Nadal met a determined opponent, 32-year-old, Stan Wawrinka, in France. He defeated the Swiss tennis ace 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1.
The now 31-year-old Spanish sniper had, at one time, been a promising soccer player before opting for a career on the tennis court. Nadal’s now legendary strength and prowess on the court makes a victory over him especially sweet.
It was not, however, in the cards Sunday for Wawrinka. At one point during the match his frustration got the better of him and he broke his racket over his knee.
Nadal played his first match at the Roland Garros court back in 2005. Twelve years later he is still chasing rival Roger Federer for the all-time Grand Slam standings.
The colossal win is important for Nadal in one other respect. His long-time coach and uncle, Toni Nadal, announced that he will stop coaching his nephew on a fulltime basis, leaving any to wonder what will happen to the famously charmed career of Nadal.
