Rabat – The National Office for Electricity and Water (ONEE) has been at the center of a controversy following serious accusations related to a power outage incident at Fez’s Grand Stadium during a game yesterday night between the Brazilian and Moroccan U23 football teams.
In a statement issued on Friday, ONEE refutes the allegations and explains it has no connection to the incident.
The controversy began on September 7, when an Arabic-language online newspaper published an article that blamed ONEE for the power cut that occurred at the Fez Grand Stade on the same evening.
The article suggested that ONEE’s Electricity Distribution Network was responsible for the outage and implied negligence on the part of ONEE.
In response to the article, ONEE argued in a statement that it cannot be held accountable for the power outage incident that occurred at the Fez Grand Stade because the stadium is not connected to its electricity grid.
“The Grand Stade de Fes is not connected to ONEE’s electricity distribution network, and the Office reserves the right to pursue legal action against these grave allegations,” the statement read.
The news comes at a time when Morocco is actively seeking to host a number of continental and international football tournaments, including the joint bid with Spain to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The incident sparked concern among Moroccans and foreign observers alike, with many taking to social media to raise questions about the country’s readiness to host prestigious tournaments should such incidents become recurring.
