Brazil will be without Neymar for its opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Morocco, with head coach Carlo Ancelotti confirming that the forward remains in recovery and is not expected to be available for Saturday’s Group C showdown at MetLife Stadium.

The update ends speculation surrounding Neymar’s participation in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the tournament’s opening round, as the Brazilian icon continues to work his way back from injury.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Ancelotti revealed that the 34-year-old is making progress but still needs more time before returning to full training.

“Neymar is working very hard to recover as quickly as possible,” the Brazil coach said.

“The expectation is that he will recover and rejoin the group next week.”

His absence represents a significant setback for Brazil, who will begin their World Cup campaign without one of the most influential players in the country’s football history.

However, Ancelotti stressed that Neymar’s importance to the Seleção extends beyond his technical ability on the pitch.

“When we call up Neymar, we call him not only for his technical quality, which is indisputable, but also for his experience and the example he can set for the young players in this group,” he explained.

The Brazilian forward had been racing against time to recover in time for the tournament opener, but Brazil’s coaching staff preferred caution rather than risking a premature return.

While Neymar is expected to miss the clash against Morocco, Brazil remain hopeful that he will be available later in the group stage should his recovery continue as planned.

The absence of the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star is a boost for Morocco ahead of the meeting between the African champions and five-time world champions. Nevertheless, Carlo Ancelotti’s side still boasts a squad packed with world-class talent as both nations look to start their World Cup journey with a victory.

Brazil and Morocco will face off on Saturday night at MetLife Stadium in the opening match of Group C.
