Rabat – University dormitories across Morocco will reopen starting October 11, the Ministry of Education announced on Saturday.
Dormitories were closed for months as part of Morocco’s preventive measures against COVID-19.
The ministry announced that it will start with re-opening dormitories for students who were already enrolled and going to universities.
The new students will benefit from university residences in a second phase.
“In order to ensure a safe return for students residing in university residences, procedures and modalities associated with this process will be announced at the level of each university residence, in accordance with the health protocol developed by the Ministry of Health,” said the Education Ministry.
It emphasized the need for strict compliance with all restrictive measures aimed at limiting the spread of COVID-19.
The statement added that the decision comes following the improvement of the epidemiological situation and in view of the “great” progress in the vaccination campaign.
The ministry urged all students to get vaccinated to limit the risks of another wave of infections as schools reopen across the country.
Morocco’s academic year kicked off on October 1. Initially, the school year was scheduled for September, before the ministry announced postponement due to the country’s epidemiological situation.
The postponement was part of a plan to ensure a sufficient vaccination rate among teen-agers in the 12-17 age group before the start of the school year.
According to recent data from the ministry, 74% of the age group population have received vaccination. This brings Morocco closer to reaching its goal of vaccinating three million students to avoid a fourth COVID wave following the re-opening of schools.
