An abandoned house recently collapsed in the Darb Qtana area of Bab El-Kissa, within Fez El Bali, the city’s historic old medina.
Fortunately, the structure was unoccupied at the time, and as a result local authorities confirmed no injuries or fatalities were reported.
As soon as the collapse occurred, emergency responders, security forces, and civil protection teams swiftly arrived at the scene.
Officials immediately secured the area to prevent further risks and implemented necessary safety measures.
They also conducted a thorough assessment of the damage, and soon after launched an investigation to determine the precise causes of the collapse and assess whether other nearby buildings might be at risk.
Fez El Bali, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its centuries-old architecture and cultural significance.
However, many of its historic buildings have suffered from deterioration due to age, weather conditions, and a lack of maintenance.
This poses a growing threat to both residents and visitors, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds, which Morocco is experiencing currently. These conditions can weaken already fragile structures.
In recent years, local authorities have intensified their efforts to restore and maintain these historic buildings, aiming to preserve the city’s unique heritage while ensuring public safety.
While some restoration projects have been successful, many structures remain vulnerable, presenting the need for continued investment in conservation and urban safety initiatives.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges the historic Moroccan city poses in maintaining its architectural legacy.
As authorities continue their investigations, the focus remains on preventing further collapses and ensuring that the old medina retains both its historical charm and the security of its inhabitants.
