Rabat – It was recently decided by the Moroccan Workers’ Union (UMT), the Democratic Work Convention (CDT), the Democratic Work Federation (FDT), and the General Moroccan Workers Union (UGTM) that they would take part in and organize a general strike on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, to last 24 hours.
This general strike is expected to include a sit-in in front of the Parliament building in Rabat.
The members of the Unions hope to denounce the retirement reforms that the government handed over to the Chamber of Counselors for examination of the entirety of the reform project a few months ago.
The unions and the government are simply not able to see eye to eye in terms of the proposed reforms, as they include an increase in the minimum age for retirement from 60 to 63 years old along with an increase in the retirement membership fee and a decrease in the retirement pensions.
Through this protest and strike, the unions are also denouncing “the government’s lack of social dialogue.”
