Rabat – A five-story building under construction collapsed completely in Marrakech’s Hivernage district in today’s early hours, local authorities said.
According to officials from the Marrakech prefecture, the incident caused no injuries or deaths.
The collapse, however, led to partial damage to an adjacent building.
Authorities explained that local and security services had intervened earlier on Wednesday night, December 31, after receiving reports of structural cracks in the building.
As a precaution, the building under construction was evacuated, along with nearby shops and surrounding structures, and the area was secured.
Following the collapse, the competent authorities opened an investigation under the supervision of the relevant public prosecutor’s office.
Administrative and technical procedures are also underway to determine the circumstances of the incident and establish responsibilities, in line with applicable laws, once all required assessments are completed.
The site remains under close monitoring as authorities continue their inquiries and safety evaluations.
This incident adds to a series of recent building collapses reported in several Moroccan cities, which keeps raising renewed concerns over construction safety and urban oversight.
In recent months, similar incidents have been recorded in Fez, where structures and works carried out without adequate safeguards have led to partial or total collapses.
While the circumstances vary from one case to another, these recurring events have drawn attention to the need for the government’s stricter monitoring of construction sites, compliance with technical standards, and early intervention when structural risks are identified.
