The new constitution, approved overwhelmingly by Moroccans in the referendum of July 1, is an “extremely important step in the democratization process” of Morocco, said the Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jiménez.
The new constitution puts Morocco “at the forefront” of the region’s countries and makes the Kingdom a “country to be followed by the Maghreb and the Mediterranean countries,” Jiménez told the press after the opening on Tuesday in Barcelona, of the sixth Spain-China Forum.
Jimenez, who has “positively” welcomed the outcome of the popular vote on Friday, also applauded the “strong support” of the Moroccan people for the new Constitution.
The Spanish government had commended the smooth running of the referendum on the draft Constitution in Morocco, saying that the will expressed by the Moroccan people will contribute to “consolidating democracy in Morocco.”
