Rabat, February 14, 2012 (AFP)

The crop year would only be ordinary if Morocco receives rainfalls in the upcoming 15 days, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Aziz Akhannouch said on Monday.

Speaking during a meeting at the House of Representatives on the impact of the delay in rainfalls, the cold snap and the frost on the crop year, Akhannouch said that data collected by his department show that the crop year is taking place under normal conditions, apart from some regions and plantations.

He noted that the regions of the south and south-east are the most affected by the lack of rainfalls, while the regions of Al Gharb, Loukous and Rabat-Salé are the most frost stricken.

As for crops, potatoes and sugarcane were the most damaged crops by the severe winter, he explained.

Akhannouch said that the state will intervene to help farmers, recalling that funds were set up in this regard.
