Beijing, April 19, 2012 (MAP)

Morocco insists on the preservation of the negotiation process under way under the aegis of the United Nations to find a final political solution to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, Minister delegate to the Foreign Affairs Youssef Amrani said on Thursday in Beijing.

This came in a meeting with representatives of Chinese media outlets mainly Xinhua News Agency, Global Times and People’s Daily.

Amrani reaffirmed that Morocco is working in good faith with the other parties to reach a political solution in conformity with the UNSC resolutions, recalling the importance of the Moroccan autonomy initiative, described as “serious and credible” by the international community.

On the situation of population held captive in the camps of Tindouf, Amrani underlined the need to conduct a headcount of this population in accordance with international commitments. The Moroccan official said that Morocco has fulfilled its human rights commitments as laid in UNSC resolution 1979, notably through the setting up of the rights council (CNDH) and two regional representations in Laayoune and Dakhla.

Referring to the negotiation process under way at the UN, the minister said that Morocco responded favorably to proposals by the UNSG personal envoy on innovative approaches by submitting concrete ideas to give momentum to negotiations under the UN auspices.

He recalled the call by HM King Mohammed VI to establish a new Maghreb order, noting that the dynamic triggered with Algeria will enable making headway with the settlement of this regional conflict.

On Syria, Amrani said that the Kingdom, the only Arab country at the UNSC, played a constructive role from the outset of the crisis mainly through sending observers and supporting the Arab League’s plan and Kofi Annan’s mission.
