The Moroccan community in the United States is shocked and saddened by the loss of a Moroccan immigrant who was found dead in the streets of Washington D.C. The deceased Moroccan male, named Hassan Samlali, is believed to be without any relatives in the United States. As such, the Moroccan community is turning to Facebook and Twitter in an attempt to locate any members of his family.
Upon being informed of this tragic death, Morocco World News (MWN) immediately contacted the Consular service of the Moroccan embassy in Washington D.C. to inquire about procedures for contacting Mr. Samlali’s family and for the transfer of his body to Morocco. Because Mr. Samlali never registered with the consulate, efforts to reach his family did not yield immediate results. Embassy officials informed MWN that in the event Mr. Samlali’s family is located, and requests the transfer of his body to Morocco, the embassy would do its best to facilitate the transfer. According to another well-informed source, the deceased will be buried tomorrow in Washington D.C.
MWN also learned that the Moroccan bank, Attijara Wafabank, provides a 500 Dirham insurance policy to help cover the costs of transfer and burial of any Moroccan who dies overseas.
As with fellow Moroccans in the United States, embassy officials are very disheartened by Mr. Samlani’s death and are exerting all the necessary energy and resources to afford his body the proper respect and burial. These same officials are also reminding all Moroccan immigrants to consult the last page of their Moroccan passport where it is clearly stated that any Moroccan living overseas has to register with the Moroccan Consulate in his/ her country of residence.
