The city council of Gennevilliers (Hauts de Seine) cancelled its decision to impose on the instructors of its summer camp to eat lunch during Ramadan, the French daily Le Figaro reported on Tuesday.

The French channel TF1 reported on Monday that the mayor of the of Gennevilliers had decided to suspended four instructors for having observed the Ramadan fast.

The reason brandished by the city council to justify its dismissal of the two instructors was that by no eating and drinking water, they could jeopardize their ability to fully discharge their responsibility in taking care of the children in the summer camp.

They “did not comply with the obligations of their employment contract, and could jeopardize the physical safety of the children they were in charge of,” had said the city council of Gennevilliers in a statement.

The controversy stems from article 6 of the employment contract, signed by the instructors, which stipulates that the latter have to “ensures that they, and the children participating in the summer camp, have something to eat and hydrate properly, especially during meal time” and be “in full possession of their physical capabilities.”

In light of the stir caused by this decision, the city council decided not to impose the application of this controversial article. Article 6 was added to the employment contract 2 years ago when a driver of a min-bus had an accident while she was fasting. The incident left two kids wounded.
