Casablanca – Idriss Lachger, a member of the politburo of the Socialist Union party called upon activists around the country to protest and demand the legalization of the Amazigh language.

Lachger called for this action after it became an official language.

The ex-minister expressed regret during a seminar organized on the sidelines of Tawiza Festival in Tangiers on Sunday. He was upset that the Amazigh language is not being used in the state’s administration and that it is absent in official correspondences and other areas of life.

Lachger harshly criticized Arab nationalists who have preached for “one nation,” when referencing the Arab nation. He condemned their inclination which tends to believe that Palestine has the priority over granting the Amazigh language its rights in Morocco.

He also criticized the “Islamists” who could not set themselves free from “O Muslims of the world, unite!” They regard Tamazight as a component that threatens them, and it is given no priority accordingly, he said.

He also suggested that that the Moroccan currency should include Tifinagh, the Amazigh script.
In an explanation of the negative attitude of the state towards the Amazigh as an identity and culture–prior to the current constitution–he highlighted that the perception of this national component as a prerequisite to the deconstruction of the nation state.

It is worth recalling that the Socialist party was in power for several years and could not come up with any significant law that might protect the Amazigh linguistic or cultural rights. However, the party has been known for its support for cultural and linguistic diversity of the country.
