London, September 4, 2012 (MAP)

Morocco’s Mohamed Amguoun on Sunday snatched the bronze medal at the men’s 400m (T13) event at the London Paralympics (Aug. 29 – Sep. 9).

Amguoun had made the event Friday by breaking the Paralympics record when crossing the finishing line in 49.04 secs. On Sunday he finished third with a timing of 49.45 sec.

The event was won by Russia’s Alexey Labzin, who set a new Paralympics record of 48.59 secs. He was followed by fellow countryman Alexander Zverev, who finished in 48.83 seconds.

It is Morocco’s second medal after the gold win by Women’s disk throw athlete, Najat el Garaa, with a world new record of 32.37 meters.

Team Morocco is the country’s biggest since first participation in the Paralympic Games in 1988. It is composed of 30 sportsmen and women, including 15 athletes, 11 volleyball players, three weightlifters and one tennisman.

The wins slightly make up for Morocco’s debacle at the London Olympics, where the participation of the north African country was marred by a number of doping cases and a mediocre performance.
