Casablanca –  Nov 30, 2012 (MAP)

France reiterates its backing for Morocco’s plan to grant autonomy to its southern provinces in a bid to find a lasting solution to the Sahara dispute, France’s ambassador in Rabat, Charles Fries said here on Thursday evening.

“France continues to support the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007,” Fries said, describing the proposal as “realistic, credible and serious to find a lasting negotiated solution under the aegis of the United Nations.”

Like Morocco, France wishes to see an end to this conflict which “weighs on the economies of the whole region, and bears the responsibility for the non-Maghreb which represents 2 pc of the GDP of each of the union’s countries,” the diplomat said at a meeting on the France-Morocco partnership.

The latest trip of Christopher Ross, the UN Secretary General’s personal envoy will allow for resuming the political process of negotiations within the framework of the United Nations, Fries said.
