Contrary to the international press’ allegations, Special envoy of the Syrian president Faisal Mokdad did not go to Latin America in order to prepare the exile of Bashar al-Assad in Venezuela. According to informed sources, the deputy foreign minister and Syrian President’s confidant went to Latin America to creat a smoke screen.
The real negotiations for Al Assad’s possible exile are alleged to be held with the Belarusian authorities. Al Assad’s advisers convinced him not to consider retirement in Venezuela or another Latin American country.
The reason is, according to them, the democratic nature of these countries where power changes hands often, leaving Bashar within the scope of possible extradition proceedings. In this perspective, President Hugo Chavez’s illness has not reassured the head of the Syrian state. A change at the head of the state in Caracas is a possibility that is taken seriously in Damascus.
