Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz’s advisors wanted to organize an important interview with one of the most famous Paris-based newspapers. Preferably, they were going for le Figaro or Le Monde.
However, both prestigious institutions are said to have politely declined General Aziz’s advisors’ advances. As a result, he had to resolve to Jeune Afrique, which ended up giving him only 2 pages, when interviews with heads of states are usually much longer.
Another discourtesy General Aziz had to accept is the status of the interviewer. Indeed, instead of someone who is used to this kind of exercise such as François Soudan or Marwane Ben Yahmed, a simple journalist was sent. This means that the room for maneuver for the Mauritanian President with the media keeps shrinking
