Marrakech – Dec 11, 2012 (MAP)
Foreign Minister, Saad Dine el Otmani voiced hope the decisions that will be taken at the Marrakech meeting of the Friends of Syria, due Wednesday in Marrakech, Morocco, and the initiatives and ideas to be taken at the meeting, will contribute largely to the settlement of the Syrian crisis.
He underlined the specificity of tomorrow’s meeting, which takes place after the unification of the Syrian opposition, noting in a statement to MAP that it comes also after the recent meeting in Geneva between the US and Russia, which certainly provides new elements to be considered in the Marrakech meeting.
The importance of this conference, which will look at the political and humanitarian aspects of the crisis, lies also in the participation of a large number of delegations (124) representing countries and regional and international organisations.
Politically, he said, the focus will be on examining the means to bring along more support for the Syrian coalition, and discussing the future of Syria, the political transition, the role that the group of the friends of Syria could play to put an end to the tragedy of the Syrian people.
At the humanitarian level, participants will examine ways to call for and organise the international assistance to end the suffering of 1.5 Syrians who will be in need of everything, especially with the upcoming winter, the minister said, adding that these needs will very likely go beyond the capacities of one country.
