Rome, December 9, 2012 (MAP)

Foreign Minister, Saad El Dine Otmani, highlighted on Friday the regional dimension of the crisis in Mali, and stressed the need to adopt a comprehensive approach for a collective and coordinated management to this issue.

The minister, who represented Morocco at the Rome Conference on the Sahel, reiterated Morocco’s support for the initiatives of the ECOWAS , and the efforts of its Mediator, Burkina Faso and the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Sahel, which promote a shared vision of the situation in the Sahel.

El Otmani also noted that the High Level Meeting, organized on December 10 by Morocco, as Chairman of the Security Council will be a further step towards this coordinated approach.

This meeting, which was attended by the representatives of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Algeria, Burkina Faso, the UN, the African Union and the European Union, aimed to address a number of issues specific to the Sahel region, mainly security, governance, and humanitarian and development aid.
