The Serb tennis player NovaK Djokovic became the first ever to win the Australian open title three times in a row after he beat Andy Murray of Britain 6-7/7-6/6-3/6-2 in Sunday’s final.
The victory in Melbourne strenghtens the 25 year-old Djokovic’s position at the top of the world tennis, while Federer and Murray will be respectively second and third when the ATP rankings are released on Monday.
Djokovic is the first man in the post 1968 Open era to win three consecutive titles in the Australian Open. Only two other players, the American Jack Crawford (1931-33) and Australian Roy Emerson(1963-67), have won three or more consecutive Australian championships.
The world number one relied on his tenacity in defense and a hampered movement from Murray’s blistered right foot to win the title. This time Novak didn’t rip off his shirt in celebration as he did a year earlier against Nadal. He just did a little dance and then applauded the crowd after the marathon 3-hour, 40 minute match.
Murray congratulated Novak during the trophy ceremony that was marked by the presence of Roger Federer and Andre Agassi to present the winner’s trophy, and he told the crowd “ Novak’s record is obviously incredible. Such a great atmosphere to play in. You’re extremely fair, so thank you very much”.
In the women’s singles final, the 23 year-old Belarusian Victoria Azarenka won over Li Na from china with a 4-6,6-4,6-3. While in the earlier mixed doubles final Sunday, Jarmila Gajdosova and Mattthew Ebden of Australia beat the Czech pair of Lucie Hradecka and Frantisek Cermak 6-3,7-5.
