People from Cheb Khaled’s hometown blamed city officials whom they accused of inviting the Rai singer to attend concerts in the city at the occasion of the Algerian revolution of November 1st 1954.
Oran residents also expressed their anger over Cheb Khaled’s preference to invest in Moroccan cities rather than Oran, the capital of the Algerian west, whose youth live under the weight of high rates of unemployment.
Cheb Khaled, who lives now in Morocco andis married to a Moroccan woman, owns estates in different Moroccan cities, including a villa allegedly granted to him by Mohammed VI the king of Morocco.
The ramifications of Cheb Khaled’s obtaining of Moroccan nationality was also fueled by Algerian media, which described the move as a “betrayal” of his country given the political tensions between the two countries, especially over the Sahara issue.
In their analysis of the situation, some Algerian news outlets said that Cheb Khaled was a victim of “political exploitation” in a moment when the bilateral relations between the two countries suffer from mistrust and lack of cooperation.
