Rabat – Egypt’s national football team received a presidential reception on Friday after making history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed the players, coaching staff, and officials to celebrate the country’s best-ever performance at the tournament.
The ceremony took place in Alamein and was attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and officials from the Egyptian Football Association. During the event, President El-Sisi awarded the team the Order of Merit and the commemorative “Cup of Pride and Glory” in recognition of their outstanding achievement.
The president praised the team’s discipline, determination, and fighting spirit throughout the tournament. During a luncheon after the ceremony, he also called for a nationwide talent identification program to discover and develop young footballers across all Egyptian governorates.
Before meeting the president, the team received a hero’s welcome at Alamein International Airport, where thousands of fans gathered to celebrate their return from the World Cup.
Egypt enjoyed its greatest World Cup campaign in history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time. The Pharaohs finished second in Group G with five points after drawing 1-1 with Belgium, beating New Zealand 3-1, and drawing 1-1 with Iran.
They then advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
Egypt’s World Cup journey ended in dramatic fashion with a 3-2 defeat to defending champions Argentina. The Pharaohs stunned their opponents by taking a 2-0 lead through Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko, while goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir saved a penalty from Lionel Messi.
However, the match turned after a controversial VAR decision disallowed what could have been Egypt’s third goal. Argentina then scored three times in the final 13 minutes to complete a remarkable comeback and eliminate Egypt.
Despite the heartbreaking exit, Egypt’s performances earned widespread praise and marked a new chapter in the country’s football history.
