BAGHDAD- A new wave of car bomb attacks rocked Tuesday the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, killing at least 31 people and wounded 133 others.

At least 31 people were killed and 133 others were wounded on Tuesday when a series of car bomb attacks were carried out across Baghdad.

Two of the explosives-laden vehicles were detonated near Nasr square in central Baghdad, killing 3 people and wounding 14 others.

Another attack took place in Husseiniya region, a predominantly Shiite suburb in northeastern Baghdad. 3 people were killed and 16 people were hurt in the attack.

Another 5 people were reported to be killed in Hayy Al-A’amel region in southwestern Baghdad and 4 in north of Baghdad, 6 in Zaferanieh district of eastern Baghdad, 7 in soutwestern Baghdad and 3 in Shala area in northwestern Baghdad.

It is not yet clear who was behind the bombings.

But the attacks came as the sectarian violence surged across Iraq in recent months, reaching its highest level since 2008.

According to the United Nations, over 5,000 people killed so far this year in Iraq, 800 of them in August alone
