Our People have lost their father,” say South Africa’s President

Marrakech – Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader and first black president of South Africa, has died today at the age of 95.

Mandela was awarded the Noble Peace Prize for his leadership in ending apartheid without the use of violence.

In a speech announcing Mandela’s death, the current South African President, Jacob Zuma said, “Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost their father.”

South Africans, and people all around the world are saddened by the news of Mandela’s death. He set an example for leaders around the world by fighting for what he knew to be right and just.

Mandela was, and will continue to be, one of the most influential leaders in the world. He wholeheartedly encouraged equality, peace, justice and understanding and became an icon for change throughout the world.

Mandela famously stated, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

We should take this time to reflect on the important actions and ambitions of Nelson Mandela. His actions show that perseverance and non-violence can make a huge impact in the world. Kindness, passion, and determination led to a reality that seemed non-existent at the time.
